What is CBN? A Guide to Cannabinol (CBN) Effects, Benefits & Properties

Amanda R.

Move over CBD and THC; it’s time to shine the limelight on another very important cannabinoid. Meet cannabinol (CBN). If you’ve taken CBD products, you’ve likely already tangoed with CBN, but you may not be aware of its effects or benefits. CBN and CBD often go hand in hand, but you can also find CBN in many THC-containing products. So, what is CBN, exactly, and how does it differ from other cannabinoids?

Below, we’ll introduce you to cannabinol and discuss its origins, effects, and potential perks. You might just find that CBN is the missing puzzle piece that takes your cannabis routine to the next level!

What is CBN?

Cannabinol, also known as CBN, is a non-intoxicating compound found in cannabis plants, including hemp and marijuana. It’s considered a “mildly” psychoactive compound and binds to receptors within the body’s endocannabinoid system, just like THC or CBD.

This cannabinoid is unique because it’s what’s known as a metabolite of THC. In other words, it forms due to the oxidation and decomposition of THC in a cannabis plant. That means it’s primarily found in high volumes in older plants. However, manufacturers can accelerate this process by exposing THC to heat and light, breaking it down, and leaving behind the CBN we know and love.

What Are the Effects of CBN?

CBN is most well known for its anti-inflammatory properties and potential immunosuppressive benefits. We know that CBN is mildly psychoactive, but it doesn’t produce a “high” like THC. However, it can create a slight “buzz” and deliver effects like relief from pain or insomnia.

Like other cannabinoids, CBN works by binding to endocannabinoid receptors throughout the body. Think of these receptors as “locks” that require certain “keys” to trigger messages and bodily reactions.

Most cannabinoids bind to CB1 and CB2 receptors, which help regulate the immune and nervous systems, among other functions. CBN, in particular, is known for stimulating CB2 receptors, which are primarily present in immune cells. CBN has a comparatively weak effect on CB1 receptors and the central nervous system.

As a result, CBN’s effects mostly impact activity in the immune system, which is likely why it’s so great at fighting inflammation and immune responses.

CBN Benefits & Properties

CBN is significantly less studied compared to CBD. So, although many benefits of CBN are supported by anecdotal evidence, more research is definitely needed to confirm them. Still, we can identify some of the key properties of CBN and put its effects to use to manage symptoms of certain health conditions. Let’s explore the different benefits of CBN as well as the research that has been conducted to date.

CBN for Sleep

Many people report that CBN provides them with a sedating effect, and it is even sometimes considered as the “sleeper” cannabinoid.

Although many report that CBN can help with insomnia, to date, only one study has indicated that it can potentially act as a sedative. The study is fairly small and outdated, so we can take its results with a grain of salt. However, we don’t say this to argue that the many who claim it can help with sleep quality are wrong. In fact, there are a couple of reasons why many may still feel sleepy.

The first is the combination of THC, CBN, and CBD that’s common in many products; this can easily create a sedating effect. The other is that because CBN is found in older cannabis plants, it’s also likely to come from plants that have higher-than-average volumes of other older terpenes that may be more likely to cause drowsiness.

CBN for Appetite Stimulation

For those looking to increase their appetite, CBN could be the solution. Although more research undoubtedly needs to be conducted, preliminary studies suggest that CBN can increase the amount that rodents eat. This suggests that the cannabinoid may be an alternative for those who typically use THC to stimulate the appetite but are not looking for the high.

CBN for Pain Relief & Inflammation

CBD has been established as an anti-inflammatory that is helpful for pain relief, but CBN is another viable option. Studies have been shown to help to reduce arthritis, specifically this study on rats in 2019.

Antibacterial Properties

CBN has evidence supporting that it can be a potent antibacterial agent! A 2008 study tested CBN on strains of MRSA, and it was found to be potent against this bacteria, which is often resistant to traditional antibiotics.

Neuroprotectant Properties

CBN has also been potentially linked as a powerful neuroprotectant. Although human studies still need to be conducted, a study on rodents in 2005 found that this cannabinoid was able to delay the onset of the condition of ALS

CBN Side Effects

The most common side effects of CBN are drowsiness and sedation, which are more likely to occur at higher doses. As is true for any cannabinoid, CBN products may also cause other unwanted side effects, such as:

  • Headaches
  • Dry mouth
  • Nausea or vomiting

It’s worth noting, though, that CBN is not typically associated with side effects at all. You may be more likely to experience unwanted effects when you consume a product that contains CBN and other cannabinoids as opposed to a CBN isolate.

Top CBN Products to Consider

If you’re ready to give CBN a try, the first thing you’ll need to think about is what kind of product speaks to you. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular CBN products on the market and how they differ.

CBN Gummies

Who it’s for: Anyone looking for long-lasting relief

If you want a product that will create effects that last the whole day, go for CBN gummies or edibles. These take longer to kick in, but once they do, they’ll stick around for hours on end. As your stomach breaks down the gummies, waves of cannabinoids will steadily get released into your bloodstream, keeping you pain- and stress-free all day long.

CBN Vapes

Who it’s for: Fans of fast-acting effects

Sometimes, you need quick relief that doesn’t require a ton of work. That’s exactly what a CBN vape is good for – fast, effortless use that delivers results within minutes. CBN will rapidly enter your bloodstream via your lungs, but its effects will also fade faster than those of an edible.

CBN Tinctures

Who it’s for: Those looking to carefully customize their CBN dosage

If you’d like to measure your dose and have precise control over how much cannabinoid you’re consuming, a CBN tincture or CBN and CBD oil might be ideal. These typically come with droppers that allow you to consume controlled doses, which makes them a great pick for those who use multiple products or use CBN to target certain health symptoms.

Final Thoughts: Cannabinol (CBN) Basics

So, what is CBN? In a nutshell, it’s a cannabinoid that’s known for its ability to reduce inflammation, pain, and stress. It’s also celebrated for other benefits, like promoting restful sleep and stimulating your appetite. How you choose to enjoy CBN (if at all), then, depends on your preferences and what you hope to gain by using cannabis.
