Getting Started with Dab Rigs: A Practical Guide for Novices

Justin Dwyer

A dab rig is a type of water pipe that uses vapor to enjoy marijuana concentrates, aka dabs. The vapor is filtered and cool before reaching your mouth, making it a smooth, potent, and enjoyable experience.

A dab rig consists of a nail (or banger), a mouthpiece, and a carb cap. You heat the nail by a torch to the desired temperature and the vapor passes through the water.

Mastering the Dab Rig

Dabbing is a popular method of enjoying cannabis that provides a quick and potent high. It’s also a great way to conserve your concentrates by only using a small amount at one time. Whether you’re new to dabbing or a seasoned pro, learning how to use a dab rig is important for the best results.

The main components of a dab rig are a nail or banger, a downstem, and a dabster. A nail or banger is the part of a dab rig that holds your concentrate and is heated to vaporize it. The nail can be made from a variety of materials, including titanium, ceramic, quartz, or glass. Glass nails are the most affordable, but they have a tendency to break easily and may contain impurities. Ceramic nails are more expensive but provide superior heat retention and do not leach harmful substances into your dabs.

Downstems on dab rigs are usually curved and provide a smoother pull than a straight downstem. The curved design of the downstem also helps to trap and disperse vapor for a more flavorful hit.

A dabster is the piece of equipment that connects the banger or nail to the rest of the dab rig. The dabster can be made from a variety of materials, but is typically constructed from borosilicate glass. The dabster can be used to store your concentrates and is also useful for transferring your dab from the banger to your mouth when taking hits. Here’s our step-by-step guide to using these rigs:

1. Make sure your nail is secured to your dab rig

An essential part of using a dab rig is preparation, and securing the nail to your rig is absolutely crucial. If your dab rig is not properly secured, you may be subjecting yourself to a world of pain. Before the nail is heated, ensure the nail is fastened to your rig without a hint of wobble.

2. Turn on the torch and heat the nail

Using your torch or heating element, uniformly heat your nail. Apply the flame of the torch directly to the nail Generally, you can heat your nail for 20-30 seconds, depending on the thickness of the nail and the power of your torch. You may notice a reddish glow to the hot nail when it is fully heated.

3. Let the nail cool

Allow the nail to cool, letting the heat disperse throughout the nail. A good rule of thumb is to let your nail cool for at least twice as long as you heated it. The nail will retain much of the heat of the torch even minutes after heating, so keep the nail away from your bare skin to avoid burns.

Low temperature dabs are higher in flavor and less harsh on the lungs.

4. Use the dabber to apply the dab to the nail

Place your dab on the nail using your dabber, inside the dome. If the nail was heated properly, the dab will evaporate very quickly. Pivot the tip of the dabber until all of the oil has evaporated.

5. Cover with the carb cap and inhale

Slowly and calmly inhale the dab. Be careful not to inhale (or exhale) too quickly, or you might irritate your throat and lungs.  If you cough in response, this may be a sign that the nail temperature was too high before you applied the dab. When the dab is at the right temperature, there should be no coughing.

You may start to experience the effects of the dab within seconds of exhalation.

6. Clean the nail

Once finished inhaling, Q-tip the nail to remove any excess residual concentrate from the nail.

Maintaining Your Dab Rig

While cleaning a dab rig, nail or banger may not be at the top of most cannabis consumers’ priority lists, doing so is essential for maximizing the life of their equipment and ensuring that they inhale clean and flavorful dabs. While it can be a bit tedious and time-consuming, cleaning a dab rig after every use is the best way to prevent buildup from negatively impacting subsequent sessions.

The most basic way to keep your dab rig, nails or bangers in good shape is to wipe them down with an alcohol-soaked cotton swab after each session. This can also help to remove any residual residue from the nail or banger, ensuring that the next dab you take will be free of contaminants and odors.

Another way to keep your dab rig in good condition is to rinse it with hot water after each use. This helps to remove any remaining residue from the rig and prevents the growth of bacteria. This is especially important if you are using your dab rig with concentrates, which can add a lot of extra residue to the rig.

If you do not have access to rubbing alcohol, you can also use warm water and a little mild soap to thoroughly clean your dab rig. This solution works just as well as rubbing alcohol but is gentle enough to not damage the surface of your dab rig. It is also a good idea to use a pipe cleaner or some other type of small tool to get into hard-to-reach places.

For a more thorough cleaning, you can also use rubbing alcohol and coarse salt. This solution is a bit more powerful than just rubbing alcohol, and it can be used to break down tougher residues. You can also add some sugar to the mixture, which acts as a natural abrasive to help break down any leftover residue.

Keep Your Rig Crystal-Clear With Rubbing Alcohol

A clean dab rig allows for the best experience when using concentrates. Not only does a well-kept rig produce more efficient hits, but it also helps the flavor of the concentrate. A dirty rig, on the other hand, can produce harsh and unpleasant tasting hits. This is why it is important to clean and maintain your rig regularly.

To do this, rinse the rig with hot water after every use. This will remove any dislodged residue and prevent odors from developing in the rig. You should also change the water in your rig often. The ideal frequency varies from person to person, but most choose to change the water in their rig once every two or three days.

Once you’ve rinsed your rig, it’s time to scrub it. The alcohol and salt will work together to dissolve any wax or residue that’s stuck on the inside of your rig. After scrubbing, you should pour out the alcohol and rinse your rig with warm water again. This will help to get rid of any odors caused by the alcohol and salt.

For a more thorough cleaning, you can also boil the water in your rig. This will kill any bacteria and remove any resinous buildup. Once the rig has been cleaned, you can use it again.

Alternatively, you can also purchase a vaporizer cleaner. These products are designed to be used on vaporizers, and they typically come in a variety of flavors. Some vaporizer cleaners also contain deodorizers to keep your rig smelling fresh. Another option is to visit a local cannabis store or vape shop. These stores have knowledgeable staff who can help you find the right products for your needs. They can also answer any questions you may have about dabbing or any other aspects of marijuana consumption. Hemper has some great options out there for those looking to give their pieces a good cleaning.

Water-Cleaning Your Dab Rig

If you want to enjoy a clean and healthy dab rig, it’s important to know how to clean your rig with hot water. This method is simple, inexpensive, and effective. It’s the best option for those who don’t have access to isopropyl alcohol or don’t want to risk damaging their rig with harsh chemicals.

To start, fill a bucket or sink with warm water and add vinegar to make a solution that’s one part vinegar to four parts water. Soak any glass and metal components of your rig in the solution for 30 minutes to loosen built-up residue.

Remove your rig from the solution and rinse each piece thoroughly with warm water. If your rig has removable components, such as the carb cap and banger, soak these separately. This will help you avoid contaminating the nail with residue or contaminants from other parts of your rig.

To finish, drain your rig and rinse it with hot water again. It’s important to change the water in your rig regularly, so you can get more use out of it between deep cleanings. You can also add baking soda to your water, which will keep it fresher and reduce the amount of vinegar you’ll need to use. Just be sure to change the water and add baking soda frequently, as bacteria can grow quickly in stagnant water.

Using Acetone

Dabbing has become the preferred method for many cannabis consumers because it delivers a high-potency hit with minimal waste. Unlike traditional herb smoking methods, which only deliver 10-15% of the available cannabinoid content, a dab can reach as high as 80%. However, it’s important to keep in mind that a dab rig requires some special care to maintain peak performance. This includes a regular cleaning regimen and changing the water regularly. If you don’t, your rig will develop a slimy layer of sticky residue that can harbor toxins. This isn’t just gross – it can lead to lung irritation, and may even cause infection.

Bangers are typically made of quartz, ceramic, or titanium, and have a neck that funnels the vapor into the rig’s chamber. Nails are usually made of either titanium or glass and come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and finishes. Some nails are equipped with a dome, which helps to keep the vapor in place during use. A dab rig can also be fitted with an e-nail, which is a device that automatically heats the nail to the perfect temperature for the desired dab.

When cleaning your rig with acetone, you’ll need the following materials: your dirty rig and nail, a torch, acetone, a sealable plastic bag or container, and cotton swabs. The simplest way to clean a banger is to heat it with the torch until any residual carbon or reclaim burns off. However if you have a large amount of buildup, acetone would be the best answer. It’s a stronger option than rubbing alcohol, so you must take care when handling the liquid (it can cause skin irritation so gloves are a good idea) and when rinsing your rig out. Doing so will make sure there’s no unwanted surprises when you go to take your next dab!
