CBD Oil Dosage Guide – 5 Easy Steps to Buy and Measure CBD Oil
One of the most confusing things about taking CBD Oil is figuring out how to measure out the amount of dosage from any given bottle. Determining how many milligrams of CBD works for you is the first step, but then it can seem like a mathematics contest to determine what strength of CBD oil to purchase and then how to measure the right amount for you. Here at The Green Dragon CBD, we want to take the complex and make it as simple as possible. Check out our Education Center for more details.
1. Determine How Much CBD Oil You Need
Let’s assume you’ve already decided to take CBD Oil sublingually as your best option for taking CBD. As one of the most traditional techniques, it is also one of the best methods to retain potency and obtain rapid bloodstream absorption. How much CBD Oil you need to take daily will depend significantly upon three (3) elements:
- Your body Weight
- Your body chemistry (you might think of this as tolerance and it could change over time)
- How significant do you need the effects (strong chronic pain may require more than general health purposes, for example)
We typically find that people underdose and don’t think that CBD is working for them, rather than taking a significant amount and trying to cut back based on effects. There are very few potential side effects to taking CBD, so we encourage people to jump in with both feet and then adjust. Of course, if you are on prescription medication, particularly for blood pressure, please check with your physician first.
CBD Oil dosage is an individual thing, but our recommendation is that the typical individual start with 50-100mg a day, split between first thing in the morning and about an hour before bed. This should be varied based on the 3 elements described above (weight, chemistry and need).
Once you have taken your starting dose for a week or two, sit back and consider the effects, even ask others close to you. Adjust upwards or downwards a bit and continue to make those adjustments until you feel comfortable. You may build up a bit of a tolerance over time, so move up your dosage when and if needed.
Go ahead and make an initial estimate of your need and give it a shot. Let’s assume for this example you have chosen 50mg per day, 25mg in the morning and 25mg at night.
2. Select Your CBD Oil Type: Full-Spectrum, Broad-Spectrum or CBD Isolate
For most people, the full-spectrum CBD oil is going to be the best option and the most cost-effective. Full-spectrum means that all of the elements of the cannabis plant (hemp in this case) have been incorporated into the process. You will receive all of the over 100 cannabinoids (of which CBD is the largest) and the over 200 terpenes (essential oils) from the plant. They work together natural to create what is referred to as the “entourage effect” to create a better overall health result. Lazarus Full-Spectrum, High-Potency Oil is an example shown below.
Broad-spectrum products are exactly like full-spectrum with the exception that the small amount of THC (another cannabinoid) has been entirely removed. There is very little (less than 0.3%) in any legal CBD products anyway, but if for some reason you are worried about drug-testing or any THC, then broad-spectrum is the way to go. Koi Prizm Broad-Spectrum CBD Oil is an example shown below.
CBD Isolate is pure processed CBD, without any of the other cannabinoids and terpenes. You will find this is a slightly higher price point given the high degree of processing required. Medterra CBD Tincture is an example of an isolate shown below.
Ok, make your pick: Full, Broad or Isolate. Done? Ok, let’s move on.
3. Select Your Brand and Flavor
The key is here is to focus on just a couple of things or you can get overwhelmed with the number of choices out there. Some people want a certain brand because they have loyalty to it, saw an ad, or were referred from a friend. That’s fine, just make sure any brand you choose has 3rd party lab testing not only to ensure it is quality CBD content, but that is has no other chemicals or pesticides. All brands we carry pass our strictest standards of quality and verification.
Remember, different brands carry different selections of full, broad or isolates, so you need to find the one with the product type you’re looking for. Once you do, one of the final determining factors is the flavor. Pick a flavor you can take without being grossed out. Some people love the natural flavor, while others prefer a strawberry or orange. Still others like more fanciful combinations like Peach Pear or Cucumber Mint.
Pick a brand that meets your product specifications and grab a flavor. You are going to be using this monthly so if you don’t like it you can always adjust. Make a decision already! Ok, ready? On to Step 4.
4. Determine the Strength of the CBD Oil Bottles to Purchase
There are two fundamental things to remember so you don’t get off-track and circle back to the previous steps.
One – the more milligrams you buy, the better the deal. The more you buy the more cost effective it will be on a dollar per milligram basis. This is the case when you buy almost anything. That’s why 5 pounds of cheese costs less per pound at a warehouse shopping club than a pound at the grocery store.
Two – the number on the bottle (for example, 1000mg) is the amount of CBD in the entire bottle. This will also come into play in Step 5, since a 2000mg bottle that is 30ml in size is actually the same concentration as a 4000mg bottle that is twice the size (60ml). So what you’re paying for is that total number, regardless of the size of the bottle. The size of the bottle just effects how many droppers you take.
Recommendation – buy the largest strength bottle you can as long as it’s within what you’re willing to spend at any one time.
5. Measure Out Your Dosage and Take it
Use the table shown in the picture below to guide you in measuring out your dosage of CBD Oil. Once you get a hang of the math, it’s easy!
In our example, let’s assume you wanted to take 25mg twice a day. You need to know how many droppers to take each time. You need to be aware of 3 things, the strength of the bottle, the size of the bottle, and the size of the dropper.
The dropper is almost always 1ml in size for a full dropper-full, but there are also 2ml droppers. Droppers should be labeled clearly. Many droppers are marked with helpful quarter-level markings. If they aren’t, you can eyeball it, we don’t have to be right down to the milligram with this.
The bottles tend to come in 3 sizes, 15ml, 30ml and 60ml. 15ml is typically reserved for the low dosage products, 30ml for most of the dosages, and 60ml for the higher end numbers. Determine what size the bottle is based on the label.
The strength of the bottle is the number on the product. It varies anywhere between very low dosage bottles like 100mg or 250mg up to high-potency bottles of 6000mg or more.
CBD Oil Dosage Measurement - the Math
Calculate the amount per dropper by taking the strength of the bottle in milligrams divided by the size of the bottle in millilitres. Then be sure to understand the size of your dropper for measurement. It’s not as hard as it sounds. A 3000mg strength in a 30ml bottle is…..yes, 100mg per millilitre. So, if you have a 1ml dropper, then it is 100mg per dropper. If you need just 25mg take a quarter of a dropper. Ok, we chose an easy one, but check the table below for a complete guide.
Sometimes things get a little more complex if the bottle has a spray head instead of a dropper. Don't worry, the labeling will give you a dosage of how many sprays and millilitres. You can see some examples on the picture below.
A few more common examples of CBD Oil Dosage measurement:
- a 1000mg strength in a 30ml bottle with a 1ml dropper is 33.3mg per dropper.
(1000mg/30ml = 33.3mg, 33.3mg per ml = 33.3mg per dropper). - A 2000mg strength in a 30ml bottle with a 1ml dropper is 66.7mg per dropper.
(2000mg/30ml = 66.7mg, 66.7mg per ml = 66.7mg per dropper). - Finally, a 3000mg strength in a 60ml bottle with a 2ml dropper is 100mg per dropper.
(3000/60 = 50mg, 50mg per ml = 100mg per dropper)
